From June 2 to 6, 2025, the international conference Wolves Across Borders took place in Lunteren, on the edge of the largest natural area in the Netherlands. The event brought together around 350 participants from Europe, North America, and Asia, including representatives of research institutes, government administrations, NGOs, and practitioners involved in wildlife conservation and wolf population management.
The goal of the conference was to create a platform for the exchange of knowledge and experience among various professional communities. A key ongoing challenge is managing the growing wolf population in Europe in a responsible and effective manner, taking into account both environmental and social conditions. The conference program focused on four main thematic areas:
- Wolves and society – social relationships, communication, myths, and ways to dispel them;
- Wolves in natural and cultural landscapes – species behavior and the role of wolves in ecosystems;
- Management, innovation, and monitoring – new technologies, population tracking, and conflict prevention;
- Law, legislation, and policy – legal frameworks, cross-border protection, and harmonization of regulations.
The event featured plenary lectures, thematic sessions, panel discussions, and workshops where participants presented the latest research findings, practical solutions, and local experiences related to wolf population management.
Wolves Across Borders 2025 was a significant event dedicated to wolf research, conservation, and the challenges of human–predator coexistence. The integration of scientific knowledge, field practice, and an international perspective enabled constructive dialogue about the future of wolves in Europe and beyond.
Dr. Wojciech Śmietana, president of our foundation, also participated in the conference and delivered a presentation titled The Impact of Parental Loss on the Fate of Wolf Family Groups – Implications for Species Conservation and Population Management, based on many years of research conducted in the Bieszczady Mountains.
We extend our sincere thanks to our donors and WWF Poland for co-financing our participation in this event.
